OPD reopens critical roadway in the heart of Garapan
ANNOUNCEMENTS | March 13, 2024
The Garapan Revitalization Project reached a major milestone, as significant construction development allowed for the opening of the formerly Paseo De Marianas pedestrian mall to vehicular traffic after 20 years of pedestrian-only traffic. This integral arterial road in the heart of the business district will again provide the community and tourists vehicular access to businesses in the Garapan Core. It is OPD’s hope that bringing back this road will usher in new opportunities and growth for the economy.
The CNMI Office of Planning and Development (OPD) advises drivers and pedestrians to exercise proper caution when passing through the area, particularly at all intersections. Please be aware of construction workers and equipment in the area, crosswalks, stop signs, one way signs, and the 15 MPH speed limit.
The Garapan Revitalization Project team is currently focused on completing the construction of curbs, gutters, and sidewalks in the initial phase. In a couple months, the project is expected to begin other phases including asphalt coating of existing roadways, electrical installation, tree and ground cover planting.
“OPD is fully committed to getting this project completed as quickly as possible, and we thank Garapan’s business owners and the community for their continued support and cooperation as construction work continues,” said OPD Senior Civil Engineer Mariano Iglecias.
The Garapan Revitalization Project broke ground in November 2022. Through close coordination among OPD, the firms working on the Garapan Revitalization project, and other government agencies with development projects in Garapan, construction work for the Garapan Revitalization Project remains on track towards its anticipated completion date of November 2024.
