CNMI Solid Waste Priority Projects at a Glance: 2025 and Onward
ANNOUNCEMENTS | Feb 11, 2025
This year is shaping up to be a transformative one for the CNMI’s solid waste and recycling systems and the Inter-Island Solid Waste Management Taskforce (ISWMT). View the graphics included here to learn more about the taskforce, its priorities, and the various CNMI solid waste and recycling infrastructure projects planned for 2025.
The ISWMT through OPD currently oversees nearly $57 million in federal funding that was awarded to the CNMI to support critical projects aimed at modernizing solid waste management systems, enhancing the resilience of these systems, and ensuring long-term sustainability for the CNMI.
In 2025, federally funded priority projects include the clearing out remaining Super Typhoon Yutu Debris on Saipan and Tinian; the beginning of development of Cell 3 at the Marpi Landfill on Saipan; and the initial stages for the future construction of compliant landfills on Tinian, Rota, and the Northern Islands.
With these initiatives underway— and with the anticipated approval of the CNMI Comprehensive Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan (CISWMP) and the many more priority projects within it— the ISWMT, under the leadership of Gov. Arnold I. Palacios and Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang, reinforces its commitment to creating a cleaner, greener CNMI for current and future generations.
