Marpi Backup Power Feasibility Study added to the CNMI Data Library

ANNOUNCEMENTS | Feb 24, 2025

The "Power Supply Options for the Marpi Landfill, Saipan Comprehensive Feasibility Study" has been added to the CNMI Public Data Library and can be found here.

This study, which was completed in November 2024, assesses various alternative energy solutions and scenarios with the goal of allowing the Marpi Landfill on Saipan to sustainably operate 24/7.

At this time, OPD and the Department of Public Works (DPW) have previously submitted the study to supplement the CNMI’s grant application for the Energizing Insular Communities grant program administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior Office of Insular Affairs. In the near future, the study will be used to pursue other federal funding sources to implement the proposed energy solutions found within the report. OPD and DPW are also in the early planning stages of conducting similar studies for Tinian and Rota.

From the study: "The Marpi Landfill ("Marpi" or "the landfill"), located on the northern end of the island of Saipan in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), is powered by a single on-site diesel generator that only operates when the landfill is open and staffed. The project team, composed of representatives of the Department of Public Works and the Office of Planning and Development (OPD), aspires to provide the Marpi Landfill with 24-hour power availability despite its remote location to increase the use of sustainable energy and to ensure environmentally compliant landfill operations."
